Deciding what to wear in your family photos can be overwhelming, so I asked my friend Lindsey Hernandez from Leather and Littles to give moms some ideas to make choosing outfits a breeze. Lindsey is a full time personal stylist and a mom of two young boys. She is full of great tips for both fashion and parenting. Keep reading below to see her tips for great photo outfits!

Preparing for a family photo shoot can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a little overwhelming. You’ve got colors to choose, outfits to coordinate, and possibly even toddlers to corral. When you’re planning your next family photo shoot, keep these key points in mind, and you’ll have a smooth and memorable experience.
Choose a color theme: Think about where your pictures will be taken. Will you be in a field at sunset? Will you be on the beach during the midday sun? Once you have your location set, find complementary colors and build your outfits around them. Going with a neutral palate and adding a pop of color is always a winning combo.
Add texture and patterns: Bring your outfits to life by choosing a variety of textures. In the winter, a fuzzy scarf, suede boots, and a matte blouse are excellent pairings. In the summer, a chiffon skirt pairs nicely with a ribbed tank and a chambray button-up.
You can also play around with patterns, just be sure to keep it simple to avoid making the pictures too “busy”. I love patterns in the details. Adding a plaid scarf for the ladies, or a patterned tie for the guys makes a simple but stunning statement.
Add the right accessories: Decide on the theme of your shoot. Is it going to be casual, fancy, or somewhere in between? My favorite accessory is a pendant necklace. It makes a statement but keeps it simple. Add complementary earrings, and you’re ready to go! Some of my other favorite accessories include scarves and hats for the ladies, and ties, pocket squares, and simple scarves for the guys.
Choosing outfits for the kids: If you have kiddos, you may wonder where to start, but the good news is…this part is easy! Once you’ve decided on your look, you can easily coordinate your kids’ outfits. Avoid clothing with writing or graphics, and opt for classic and timeless looks. Khakis, denim, and corduroy go a long way! Since they are little, you can add a bit more patterns to their looks. For example, if your husband is going to wear a patterned tie, you could dress your boys in coordinating plaid button-downs.
Last but not least, for the kiddos, make sure they’re comfortable. This will help keep tantrums at bay, and will make for an enjoyable experience for the whole family.
Just remember, no matter what you wear, taking family pictures is a special time, and one that you’ll be able to look back on forever. Just plan ahead, take a few deep breaths, and enjoy the moment!
