Bluebonnet Photos: A Texas Tradition | Frisco Family Photography

It's spring in Texas, which means your newsfeed is probably filled with pictures of kids sitting in the middle of a bluebonnet patch. There's just something so picturesque about a cute kid in the flowers. This year I was thrilled to finally have the chance to take these pictures with my own cuties! One evening last week, we loaded up the boys, bug spray, and our baby wrangler (Nana) and hit the park. I thought I would give you some tips from our experience so that you can have your own spring bluebonnet photos!

Time it Right

Early morning or late evening are prime times for outdoor photos, and these are no exception. We got my favorite shots around 7:15 PM.

Find the Sun...

I like to take photos with the sun behind the subject for a couple reasons. One, the kids aren't squinting. Two, the sun behind them in the early morning or late evening gives a soft golden glow. Third, it reduces harsh shadows on their faces. We want to see their sweet smiles and bright eyes!

...And the Shade.

Avoid putting your subject in areas of spotty shade. I like to find an area of solid shade with sun behind them. If the sun is low enough in the sky, it is easier to get great lighting without as much shade.

It's All About the Angle

It would be great to find a big field of bluebonnets with no buildings, power lines, or busy roads surrounding them, but that's just not always possible! You can still get great photos in not so great spots. Shoot from slightly above to keep the focus on your subject and the flowers in the surrounding area. If you shoot straight on you will capture all the messy background that will make your photo less that ideal.

Let Them Play!

Confession: As much as I love a perfectly posed photo with smiling faces and open eyes, I love the candid shots even more. Photos of my boys playing together melt my heart! Don't stress if your kids aren't in the mood to pose for the camera. Let them play and snap away!
